Today we received official news of the devastating loss of one of our alumni, Miles Applebaum. He had been reported missing on Monday and his body was found in a nearby forest preserve Thursday evening.
Miles came to Lagond in the fall of 2009, playing guitar in his first band, Sasquatch (dressed like lumberjacks!) and continuing to study with us and perform in numerous bands over the years, developing a particular affinity and talent for jazz. He had a fluid, light touch in his jazz playing but could rock with the best of them.
Today the entire Lagond community is deeply saddened by this loss, remembering a gentle, articulate and always stylish young man. Miles requested that people listen to the song ‘Revelry’ by Kings of Leon, and think of him.
Our love and prayers are now with the Applebaum family as they go through these difficult times. Miles’ mother Shari has requested that we jot down any memories or experiences we have had with Miles for her in order to keep his spirit alive within all of us. Any stories can be sent to the school for us to submit to the family or if you are Facebook friends, please post on Miles’ wall.
The funeral services will take place on Sunday, October 5th at 11:30 am at Congregation B’nai Yisrael, 2 Banksville Road in Armonk, NY. Shiva will be in the Applebaum home beginning at 5 pm on Sunday and extend through Tuesday.
Miles struggled with depression which, it appears, finally overtook him. We strongly urge anyone who suffers from this overpowering disease to speak out and seek proper help and treatment. Depression is a silent killer and not one that can be easily borne alone, a condition it prefers. We will carry the sadness of his struggle with us forever. He was a good man with a lifetime of beautiful gifts to offer.
“So the time we shared it was precious to me
All the while I was dreaming of revelry…”
